There are three main characteristics that determine the type of wine.

The color

Based on this, the wines are divided into three categories, White, Red (rosé) and Red (red). The color of the wine comes from both the color of the grapes and the winemaking methods. But it is possible to make white wines from red grapes.

The sugars

Depending on their sugar content, wines are divided into dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet and sweet. Greek legislation clearly defines the required sugar content, so that a wine can be classified as dry or semi-dry, etc.

Carbon dioxide

Depending on their content, the wines are characterized as still or simple, semi-sparkling and sparkling. Depending on the origin of the carbon dioxide, we distinguish them into “Natural sparkling wines”, in which the carbon dioxide comes from alcoholic fermentation and has been preserved in the wine, and “Carbonated”, in which we have added it afterwards.

Also, the above 3 types of wine are classified into categories based on their quality.

Greek wines with Designation of Origin (VQPRD), i.e. OPAP wines and OPE wines (PDO wines of Greece) are included in this category of wines. These are wines of superior quality, made with grapes from specific varieties, locations and method of production. Based on Greek legislation, 27 small, wine-producing regions of origin of quality wines have been identified, such as e.g. Patras, Nemea, Mantinea, Naoussa, Samos, Peza, etc. These wines have a state, numbered, red ribbon on the bottle mouth.

This category of wines includes all Local Wines and those of the wines with “Appellation by Tradition” that have an established geographical indication at the same time, i.e. Verdea and 15 Retsinas (PGI wines of Greece).

Varietal wines are a new category of wines, which will include those table wines that meet the conditions and controls defined in article 63 of Regulation 607/2009. These wines acquire the right to indicate the year of harvest and their varietal composition (but not their geographical indication), unlike ordinary table wines.

“Simple” table wines are a category of wines that includes all wines that do not naturally belong to the categories of PDO and PGI, but also not to the category of varietal wines. Table wines still do not have the right to indicate either the year of harvest or the varieties involved in their composition.
